The Peter und Irene Ludwig Stiftung sends a visiting professor to the Hungarian University of Fine Arts every year. This year, Sophia Süßmilch is our guest.
Sophia Süßmilch works in a multimedia way. She paints, creates sculptures and performances, as well as textile, photographic, and video works. In her art, Sophia Süßmilch engages with the big questions of human existence: Why are we here? What makes us human? What is love? What does morality mean?
She approaches these questions with a great deal of humor, in a playful and unique manner. Her art highlights the absurdities of social norms and rules. It can touch or repel the viewer. Human emotions and language also play a significant role in her work.
In her talk, Sophia Süßmilch presents her artistic practice and explores how thin the line between shame and rage can be—and whether being angry all the time might actually make one happy.
