Curating Communities
lecture by Stijn Huijts

Economic, cultural and political dynamics can impact the perception of a cultural institution within the community, so that individuals no longer see themselves as stakeholders in a museum. Who are these different stakeholders, and how can a museum handle its relationship to them? Stijn Huijts, director of the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht, will speak on this topic based on his extensive experience managing cultural organisations.

Stijn Huijts is currently director of the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht. Previously he was the director of SCHUNCK*, a museum and multidisciplinary cultural center in Heerlen and, before that, of the Het Domeinmuseum in Sittard. He has organised numerous exhibitions in the field of international contemporary art, including exhibitions by Pipilotti Rist, Bjarne Melgaard, Ed Templeton, Rita Ackermann, Bas Jan Ader, Öyvind Fahlström, Wim Delvoye, Folkert de Jong, Cao Fei, Oscar Niemeyer, John Cage, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Shaun Gladwell. In 2004, Huijts was the curator of the Dutch contribution to the 26th São Paulo Biennial, and he has been active in the presentation of Dutch artists on the international scene. His writings on artists, contemporary art, and museums have been published in various catalogues, journals, and newspapers. Alongside these activities, Huijts is a guest lecturer at academies and postgraduate research institutes in the Netherlands and abroad, and an advisor to the Mondriaan Foundation and the Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture.

The lecture will be held in English.
