The Ideal Residency Program in Budapest?

Workshop and public presentation in the scope of Opening Our Closed Shops

Discussion with the participants of the Opening Our Closed Shops 3-day international workshop

Participants: Jonathan Garfinkel (CAN), Dénes Krusovszky (HUN), Konstantin Lom (GER), Kaiwan Mehta (IND), Goran Radovanović (SRB), Karol Radziszewski (POL), Ivana Smiljanić (SRB), Ulrike Syha (GER), György Vári (HUN). Moderators: Gergely Nagy and Zsófia Lóránd

Matthias Megyeri’s exhibition and the international workshop are the Hungarian closing events of the Opening Our Closed Shops three-year Eastern European residency exchange program, an initiative of Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart.

In the scope of the workshop, the participants, mostly former resident artists of the Solitude network, are to exchange their ideas about the possibilities and ideal conditions of a residency program in Budapest. They will also share their experiences with the audience at a public presentation on 7 June.

What does the city recommend? What would make such a program different here than in any other city? How do they perceive the contemporary art scene and the forms available for making contact with it? What are the ideal circumstances for creative endeavours and what are the main aspects that make a residency program truly profitable for both the artists involved and the Hungarian art scene? Financial, existential, physical and emotional security of the residing artists and the ones living and working here – in fact, even that of local communities and the entire society – will be another crucial issue.

A sister event will take place between 1- 4 June 2010 in Novi Sad, Serbia at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina, organized by New Media Center_kuda.org, involving an exhibition and discussion on the same topics.
