Rebecca Major was born in Budapest in 1971, and has been living in New York since 1979. She studied painting at the Pratt Institute. “This project was a three-year experiment. I was carrying a compact camera with me all the time, and made a comprehensive survey of lost gloves, particularly in New York City. This near-obsessive collection activity outlines a method of measuring time. Collection can be considered a recording of history, however insignificant the event seems. The work also deals with death, mortality, the organicity of human presence and its plasticity; it dresses what is otherwise an impenetrable urban environment with the appearance of vulnerability” (Rebecca Major). Even when lost, a glove carries the character of its owner, and allows a view into certain phases of their life. The articles in the photos set off multitudes of fictitious stories and opportunities for interpretation.
