The definition of an abstract image is relative because it covers a wide spectrum, from geometric to monochrome or expressive forms. However, an image expressed in abstract forms can be interpreted within its own system: the system of geometric relationships, the relationship of colours to each other, the dynamics of gestures. ZSÓFIA BARABÁS, a member of the younger generation of painters, is strongly influenced by her studies in geometric and conceptual painting. Her earlier canvases, with their strict system, have recently been replaced by patches of colour painted with large gestures, and by the colourfulness of patch surfaces enriching the silhouette of amorphous forms. As a result of the painting technique and the mixed use of paint, her paintings resemble collages. Her pictorial forms are made dynamic by the alternation of solid and loose surfaces, the composition being formed by the interaction of amorphous planar forms stacked on top of each other and the background and foreground. Her work is characterised by a strong, individual signature. Zsófia Barabás’ paintings convey a lively, fresh mood, typically youthful in tone.
