Dóra Maurer (1937, Budapest) is a central figure of the Hungarian neo-avant-garde; beside her paintings, graphics and conceptual works, her films and education activity are also very important. The examination of the senses, of the faculty of perception, plays an important part in her work. Arranging the four or five photos in different sequences produces different narratives. The stories are not created by the artist, but emerge in the viewer, who perceives and interprets the photos as stills from a film, and then makes a temporal sequence of these images. The systematic presentation and structuring of the possible variants is introducing the attitude of the observing, methodical scientist into the realm of the visual arts. Chance takes the place of artistic composition.
