Hans-Georg Kern, who was born in Deutchbaselitz, near Dresden, could not accept the political and ideological underpinnings of art, and in 1957 enrolled at the West Berlin university of art.

Arnulf Rainer began drawing human faces in the 1960s. At first he made realistic portraits and then surreally grimacing, fictional ones. After discovering his own features in the grotesque facial expressions, he began to paint his own reflection from the end of the decade.

The painting Matador and Nude Woman fits into the two overarching themes informing Picasso's entire oeuvre: one is bullfighting, the other is male-female relationship. In his late works, the woman is often unclad while the man plays various roles.

The great painter of historical panoramas created a four-part work on the 1871 Paris Commune: The Army Restores Peace and Order…. Already in its title the painting is provocative.
