From 1966 on, “Musketeers” form a heterogeneous, recurring group in Picasso's oeuvre.

The painting Matador and Nude Woman fits into the two overarching themes informing Picasso's entire oeuvre: one is bullfighting, the other is male-female relationship. In his late works, the woman is often unclad while the man plays various roles.

Recovering from surgery in 1965, Picasso, in the middle of his 80s, sets to drawing and painting with a renewed effort in his new studio.
