Polish painter, graphic and video artist Rafał Bujnowski (1974, Watowice) studied architecture before having his degree in graphic art at the Technical University of Krakow, in 2000. In 1995, he founded, with Marcin Maciejowki and Wilhelm Sasnal, the “Ładnie” (beautifully) art group, which worked until 2001. Bujnowski’s works meld conceptual art with painting, and simultaneously reflect on the contemporary social functions of art, and the conventions of the artistic tradition. He makes his own reproductions of his paintings of everyday objects, evokes the aura-destroying mechanism of modern mass media with the workmanship of the painterly tradition, or makes modern mass images, like photographic portraits or demonstration signs with the traditional painting technique. The digital print made from his Sunset is an integral part of the painting, as well as its documentation, in the conceptualist sense.
