Szabolcs KissPál (b. 1967 in Marosvásárhely / Târgu Mureş, Romania) graduated from the Academy of Arts in Cluj / Kolozsvár in 1992, then pursued graduate study at the Hungarian College of Fine Arts. His work consists primarily of installations and objects, with a focus on the themes of intermediality and interactivity. His aim is to create a new vocabulary to meet new demands, using forms and techniques both old and new together. Representation of reality takes place in his work on various levels, but not in any usual manner: he employs manipulation and misdirection to force the viewer to rethink old places, topics, and concepts. His Utopia Battery uses a fabric reeling machine and a DVD player: an old and a new technology side by side, in the vivid mode that is Kisspál's stock in trade. The installation is constantly furling the red flag in response to human input, an ironic representation of the indispensability of human cooperation for the maintenance and termination of ideologies.
