Eduard Steinberg is a Russian painter, philosopher and activist, one of the most well-known representatives of the second generation of the Russian avant-garde. His father, the poet, literary translator and artist Arkady Steinberg was arrested and exiled to the Gulag shortly after his birth.

Andrey Filippov belongs in the circle of Moscow Conceptualists. Their works are characterised by visual and textual symbols and an interest in problems of form. Between 1976−1981 he studied at the studio of the Moscow Art Theatre, and started painting in 1982.

Yuri Albert is famous for his text-centric conceptual art. His work is embedded in the context of extra-institutional, self-organised, unofficial Soviet art practices of the seventies. Being one of the most consistent Moscow Conceptualist, he works in diverse genres.

Russian artist Ivan Chuikov (b. 1935 in Moscow) came into contact with the young, “unofficial” avant-garde as early as the late 60s.

Yankilevsky was the number one nonconformist artist of the Soviet Union in the sixties. Already at the age of 18 he was working as graphic designer and book illustrator. Between 1957 and 1962 he studied at the Moscow Polygraphic Institute under Ely Belyutin.

As one of the most active underground artists of the eighties, Leiderman was a regular participant in illegal apartment exhibitions in his birth town, Odessa as well as Moscow.

According to Victor Tupitsyn, the mission of Socialist Realism was to represent the Soviet identity and disseminate it through an official iconography.
