Kokoro no Arika – The Location of the Spirit is the first large-scale exhibition in Hungary for ten years to give an overall survey of the actual situation of Japanese society and art. The eleven artists, ranging from up-and-coming young artists to “veterans”, react to questions of society, everyday life and subculture in the diverse fields of painting, photography, architecture, fashion and animation.

In Hungary, The Japan Foundation held an exhibition in 1993 entitled Invisible Nature, also at the Ludwig Museum. Since then a lot of things have changed in Japan: “Japan is tired. Japan has lost its confidence. The Japanese are wandering aimlessly.” – the 2001 Basic Law on the Promotion of Culture and the Arts starts with these words.

The exhibiting artists of Kokoro no Arika all reflect on, in some way or other, the problems of today’s Japanese society: the abrupt end to economic development, the impairment of public security, a feeling of being lost and the loss of confidence in traditional moral and artistic values.
