Adrian Paci made this video, simply recording his three-year-old daughter telling a series of improvised fairy tales, soon after he arrived with his family to Italy, taking refuge from the violent turn of events that shook Albania in 1997. Paci studied as a painter, but temporarily abandoned the medium and turned toward new techniques: Albanian Stories is among his first video works. The experience of exile, the trauma of separation and having to adapt to a new environment created a novel context for his works. Folkloric characters, such as a cow, a cat, and a rooster, meet soldiers and international forces through the narration of an innocent child. The work uses a simple, documentary language to emphasize the paradoxical and absurd situation the characters have to face. KB
