David Maljkovic (1973, Rijeka) first studied philosophy and then earned a degree in painting and media art at the University of Zagreb in 2000. In 2009, he won the special prize for young artists at the 6th Madrid ARCO, the Contemporary Art Fair. Maljkovic’s art travels between the past and the future, his works seem to move in a nonexistent, tautological space and time. His These Days (2005) and Lost Memories from These Days (2006−2008) use the abandoned Italian pavilion at the Zagreb Fairground to reflect on the privileged position of Yugoslavia in the sixties and seventies, a status of oscillating between the East and the West. It also adds to its interpretative efforts the reflection of today’s Zagreb youths on the legacy of the past. The installation Lost Memories from These Days was prepared for the Croatian Pavilion’s 2007 display at the Venice Biennale, but was not shown there. He presented it at the 2008 Berlin Biennale, and the collages recently acquired by Ludwig Museum are a follow-up to this installation.
